KUALA LUMPUR: Entertainment services provider, iflix, is optimistic of producing between five and ten original content work this year as it aims to increase the amount of locally produced content for its subscribers.

Co-Founder and group chief executive officer Mark Britt said this could be achieved through collaboration with government bodies and the local creative community.

“Malaysians have extraordinary talent and ideas which are more than capable to produce content that can attract mass audience.

“For this year, we are looking to produce 5-10 projects (original content) but we are optimistic that we can do more as demand for local content is increasing,” he told reporters after meeting the Council of Eminent Persons yesterday. Meanwhile, Britt said the company had witnessed a decline in its local content offering over the past three years as Malaysia’s entertainment industry did not produce enough box office films and content to make the cut in iflix.

Saying that international content dominated the market segment, he said films from the United States dominated the box office last year.

“This is unusual because the amount of local talent in the industry is huge and we believe that they are capable of producing more quality products,” he added.

The company, which claims to be the world’s leading entertainment service for emerging markets, recently achieved 15 million subscribers on the back of a 250 per cent growth since January 2018.
