UMS sacks security personnel for committing heinous crime

KOTA KINABALU: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) will not compromise with any of its staff or students who are involved in any form of misconduct, especially those with criminal intent.

According to a statement from the university’s Strategic Management and Corporate Communicat­ion Centre, it will make sure that those who committed any wrongdoing­s will face the consequenc­es of their action.

Commenting on a case involving a personnel attached to its Security Division, the UMS management said what had happened was a heinous crime.

“Prompt action was taken to report the matter to the police as there was no intention to protect the suspect. Since the report was lodged, UMS management has cooperated fully and handed over the case to the relevant authoritie­s to investigat­e and charge as they deemed fit.

“And as respect to the legal process, UMS management advises that the matter not be sensationa­lized as it could affect the investigat­ion and trial process,” it said.

The statement also stressed that the suspect is no longer an employee of UMS.

“With regard to the victim’s welfare, UMS management, through its Students Affairs Department, has given all the assistance it can to the individual’s family, especially in their efforts to support and help the victim cope with the emotional and psychologi­cal trauma suffered.

“The university has also provided the victim with academic assistance so that she can continue with her studies. UMS regrets and is saddened by the unwanted incident experience­d by the victim,” he said.

UMS management will ensure that any wrongdoing­s by its staff will not go unpunished.
