LABUAN: Two students of the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) were arrested for their involvement in illegal racing.

The duo aged 18 and 19 who escaped from ‘Ops Samseng Jalanan’ checks were nabbed at about 2am early morning at Jalan Mohd Salleh.

They are being investigated under Section 42 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

“Doing something like this (illegal racing) is unacceptable, especially when it comes to putting people’s lives at risk,” said Labuan deputy police chief DSP Ibrahim Ghani.

At least 14 summonses were issued to motorists for various offences including modification of exhaust, missing side mirrors and P stickers among others.

He said street racing could be extremely dangerous for the driver, spectators, innocent motorists and bystanders.

“Individuals have been critically and even fatally injured due to this senseless behaviour and we cannot allow this to happen here,” he said.

“We have received complaints of street racing here and our officers were in the right place at the right time to witness this occurrence and they responded swiftly.

“We will not tolerate this behaviour and allow participating individuals to endanger innocent citizens,” he said. –
