Time to bring back glory on history, heritage, folklore — UMS
KOTA KINABALU: Talks and discussions about history, heritage and folklore are no longer common among the younger generation.
And this most probably signifies that the subject matters no longer matter much to them or of any importance, said Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Deputy Vice Chancellor (Students Affairs and Alumni) Professor Dr Ismail Ali.
Speaking at the launch of the international conference on the archipelago's history, heritage and folklore (PASWFN) at UMS yesterday, Dr Ismail who was representing the Vice Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr Kamarudin D. Mudin, said he hoped the message to those attending the conference, would reach the target group.
“It is time for us to bring back the glory of the archipelago's history, heritage and folklore,” he said.
He added that the conference should also be expanded to other countries.
The participants of the conference comprised Malaysians, Indonesians and Bruneians.
Meanwhile, Dr Kamarudin in his speech which was read by Dr Ismail, said that the conference would be held from Aug 15 to 16.
He said that UMS is one of the higher learning institutes in Malaysia that emphasizes on research in the fields of history, heritage and folklore.
He also said that countries in the archipelago were rich in history, heritage and their own folklores.
“Knowledge of history, heritage and folklore must be given serious attention as it mirrors the culture and identity of the people residing in the archipelago,” he said.
A total of 90 working papers will be presented in the two-day event.
