KOTA KINABALU: A former clerk at a postal and courier service company was slapped with a six-year jail term and RM50,000 fine, in default, six months' jail for embezzling RM49,156.92 of the company's cash money.

Sessions Court judge imposed the sentence on Rosline Midi, 32, after the latter pleaded guilty to the offence when the case came up for trial.

Rosline had committed criminal breach of trust of the cash money which was entrusted to her at Pos Malaysia office, Likas branch here at 1pm on March 31, 2017.

The offence was framed under Section 408 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to 14 years, with fine and whipping, upon conviction.

In pleading for a lenient sentence, Rosline through her counsel, Henry Gudid, told the court that she had parents who were unemployed, and siblings who were still schooling to support.

Henry also said his client's father was involved in an accident two years ago which made Rosline bear the responsibility of supporting her family.

He also said Rosline had been working with the company from 2008 until 2017 and she was suspended from work after she was charged with the offence.

Deputy public prosecutor Rustam Sanip, however, urged for a deterrent sentence to be imposed against the accused on the ground that Rosline had embezzled the money which was entrusted to her during her services at the company.

The court also ordered Rosline to serve the custodial sentence starting from yesterday.
