Video of tourists’ stay in Sibu garners over 11,000 views on YouTube

SIBU: This town is receiving some attention from netizens, based on the high viewership of a video uploaded via YouTube, which shows two foreign tourists spending their holiday here.

The 14-minute recording entitled ‘Shocked in Sibu! – Malaysia’s Largest Indoor Market’, posted on Aug 18, shows the two enjoying their time here, visiting the central market and also savouring Foochow dishes.

It drew 11,846 views as at 6pm yesterday – this number is expected to rise.

The tourists arrived here from Kuching by bus – one of them commented that the road trip was ‘a little bit too bumpy’.

Upon arrival, they shot their video straight away – walking along Laichee Lane before proceeding to the Noodle House, where they got to enjoy ‘Kampua’ noodles and ‘kompia’ (local scones) stuffed with ‘rendang’ beef.

They described the noodles as ‘fantastic’, and the ‘kompia’ as ‘really good’.

In a footage of them visiting Sibu Central Market, one of the pair was surprised upon being told about the place being the largest wet market in Malaysia.

“I thought it was the biggest in Sarawak. Amazing,” she remarked.

They were looking for exotic fruits at the market when they were shocked to see some traders selling live chickens wrapped in newspapers.

“I can’t believe what I see. I have never seen anything like this. It’s like fish and chips – but, (this is) chicken and chips,” one of them commented.

The other tourist continued: “I am really shocked. This is like – shocking! I can’t believe this – scary.”

It appears that the two tourists had undertaken quite a bit of a research on this town before the trip.

“It’s a lot smaller than Kuching, with a population of 162,000,” one of them said.

It is learnt that they both continued their journey to Bintulu after the stopover here.

The YouTube page, named ‘Beer For Breakfast’, also has a host of videos recounting the duo’s adventure in Kuching including their trips to Bako National Park, Kuching Wetlands and Medan Niaga Satok – these videos have attracted between 6,000 and 11,500 views.
