Man, woman jailed for stealing

KOTA KINABALU: A man was jailed for 12 months by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday for stealing a women’s purse.

Magistrate Afiq Agoes imposed the sentence on Abd Rahman Amat, 32, after the latter pleaded guilty to committing the offence at a public Tamu (market) in Putatan at 8.30am on August 19.

The offence was framed under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to seven years or a fine or both, upon conviction.

Abd Rahman had snatched the purse of Sim Ah Mui, 63, which contained a MyKad, driving licence and ATM cards.

Based on the facts of the case, Abd Rahman was caught by the public after the victim shouted ‘Pencuri’ (thief) and he was handed over to the police afterwards.

In a separate case, a masseuse, Farah Diba Ahmad Nawawi, 37, was jailed for 10 months for stealing a customer’s purse in a room of a hotel here.

She stole the purse containing RM500 and Brunei Dollar 350, belonging to Yvonne Ludayan Bakansing, 25, at a hotel in Kampung Air here at 12.30am on August 17.

The offence was framed under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years and also liable to fine, upon conviction.

The magistrate also ordered for Abd Rahman and Farah to serve their jail sentences from the date of their arrest.

Prosecutin­g officer Inspector Nur Hidayah Mahzan prosecuted while counsel Sitti Nurul Ain Sahidah Pitting represente­d both the accused.
