Singapore alert over radioactive device missing in Malaysia

SINGAPORE: Singapore has stepped up inspection at its checkpoints after a Radioactive Dispersal Device (RDD) containing the radioactive isotope Iridium-192 was reported missing in Malaysia on Aug 10.

Channel NewsAsia reported that the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) has been monitoring the case, and said that its checkpoints had the capability to detect radioactive threats.

"For example, ICA officers use equipment such as scanners and handheld detectors to screen for radiation levels on cargo, vehicles and travellers entering Singapore," an ICA spokesman was quoted as saying.

Intense investigations are being carried out in Malaysia into the missing 23-kg RDD which cost about RM75,000, belonging to a company in Shah Alam.

The device was reported missing as it was being brought back from Seremban to the factory in Shah Alam by two technicians between 2 am and 3 am on Aug 10.

The device, which emits beta and gamma radiation, could be misused, including by terrorists, to make bombs.

Malaysian Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun reportedly said that two of the company's employees, both Malaysians, were remanded one day after the incident and were released on Friday after having their statements recorded.
