Hunt for housebreaking gang leader

-

KOTA KINABALU: The police here have initiated a manhunt for the leader of the ‘Ramos Gang’ or ‘Geng Ramos’, a housebreaking gang that has been active since early this year.

City police chief ACP Habibi Majinji said the suspect is identified as Raimon Mawang, a 27-year-old local man.

“The suspect, who is also known as Ramos, has his last known address at Kampung Pulutan Manggatal. We urge those who may have information of his whereabouts to contact the nearest police station,” Habibi told reporters yesterday.

Habibi also disclosed that the police have smashed ‘Geng Ramos’ with the arrest of five of its members on August 24.

The suspected gang members, aged between 23 and 30 years old, were picked up from several locations, including a fuel station in Inanam during a dragnet that started from midnight to 6am on August 24, he added.

“We believe that these five suspects can help police solve 10 housebreaking cases that they were involved in,” he said, adding that some of the suspects were former convicts, while three had tested positive for drugs.

The remand for all five will end on August 28, but police will apply for an extension pending further investigations, said Habibi.

According to him, the gang’s modus operandi was to target houses that are left unattended for a long time. Members of the gang would monitor the houses before making their move, he said.
