Mural of load-laden labourer to be reinstated

-

SIBU: The mural depicting a wharf labourer carrying a gunny sack that used to be on a wall of the Khoo Peng Loong Road hawkers centre here will be reinstated.

A spokesperson for Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) said the wall had been demolished to facilitate the upgrading of the centre.

The on-going upgrading works includes the erection of a new wall, and the mural that had gone with the demolition of the previous wall will be on the wall again.

The mural titled `Labourer’, painted by a local artist Timothy Wong, was the first of 10 murals in this town initiated by SMC under its street art project in 2015.

It reflects the early days of Sibu in the 1950s and 1960s when dock labourers or coolies were a common sight at the wharf, carrying goods to and fro express boats and motor launches.

The second mural titled `Sibu Local Delicacies’ at a lane in Market Road depicts `kompia’, `pulut panggang’, `dian bian hu’, `kampua’ and `penyaram’.

Others include the `Childhood’ and `Wrapped Chicken and Duck’ at Sibu Central Market building.

Five others are `Ethnic Butterfly Mural’ at Maju Road; `70s Old Bus’ and `Dian Bian Hu’ at Blacksmith Road; `Batik & Pantun’ at Mission Road; and `Multiracial Unity Living’ at Channel Road.

The new addition to the street art is titled `Teh Tarik Doodle’ which can be seen at the entrance of Sibu Central Market multistorey car park.

The painting depicts a man making `teh tarik’ which spills produce semblances of many objects such as Wisma Sanyan, Sibu Gateway, Sibu Heritage Centre, a trishaw, a Base jumper, swans, crocodiles, an express boat and a hornbill.
