Sabah archers take aim at 6 Sukma gold

-

KOTA KINABALU: The 16member state Sukma (Malaysia Games) archery squad continues to be a source pool for gold medals as Sabah aims for glory at the 19th Malaysia Games in Perak this month.

Team manager Paul Leong said Sabah will be represented by four archers each in the recurve and compound events for men and women.

“We maintain our sights on six gold medals to try and maintain the haul we made at the last Sukma in Sarawak two years ago.

“We managed to achieve our target back then and hopefully, we can do it again in Perak. It is not an easy task but we will try our best,” he said when contacted yesterday.

According to Paul, most of the archers were already in Perak to familiarise themselves with the competition venue before the event proper begins on September 16 to 21.

Also accompanying the squad were Gabriel Liew (compound coach), Charley Chia, Azmi Shazinan, Rahim Mubarak (recurve coach), Otto Wong (assistant coach) and Sulin Eban (chaperon).

The women’s recurve squad comprises Caroline Fread, Nur Wazira Junaidi, Inkacristie Stephan and Doreen Dodi, while the men’s team includes Ahmed Afiq Akhiroman, Mohd Syauqi Azmi, Izzan Zaidan Anderson and Muhd Syafiq Busthamin.

Tasked to win gold for the compound events were Diana Tsen Mei Fung, Clementina Banadus, Norfasikin Bilau and Emily Lo for the women’s events and Eugenius Lo, Adriel Liew, Mecedger Sage Edie and Chin Shi Yi in the men’s events.

All Sabah archers have the potential to shine and he hoped the standard of competition at these Sukma games would bring out the best in them, Paul added.
