Muhd Afif, Charlayne champions of KGK Amateur Open

KOTA KINABALU: Muhd Afif Muhd Razif and Charlayne Chong were crowned champions at the 16th KGK Amateur Open which ended at the Kudat Golf Club (KGK) on Sunday.

The victories for the in-form golfers were their second in the space of two weeks, having also won at the 27th Men and 20th Ladies edition of the Labuan Golf Open recently.

Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) golfer Afif carded a three-day score of eight-over 224 to edge seasoned campaigner Lee Ka Tung by a single shot enroute to lifting the Men’s title.

Afif opened with 75 on Friday’s opening round to trail in second place and he maintained the position at the end of the second round the following day after playing 74 for 149.

Consistenc­y was key to Afif’s comeback win on Sunday’s final round where he concluded with 75 for his total 224 to cement victory.

Ka Tung, who was leading going into the final round, had to settle for second best after the Sarawakian accumulate­d 225 having played 76, 71 and 78.

First day leader Leduin Jordan Mobijohn from Sabah finished third after carding 74, 74 and 78 for 226.

In the Ladies category, Charlayne was in her own class as the Sabah Golf Associatio­n golfer scored a comfortabl­e 18shot victory over Chew I Youn.

Charlayne played 83, 73 and 72 for her total of 12-over 228 while I Youn was second with 246 (82, 81, 83) and Nabila Alifudin third with 248 (85, 85, 78).
