SANDAKAN: The Sabah Rugby Squad, representing Sabah in Sukma, are hoping to be able to get a gold medal for the Sabah contingent.

Sandakan Municipal Council (SMC) president Datuk Peter Hii Chang Lik said SMC was giving full support to the squad, which left for SUKMA in Perak, yesterday.

“We hope our rugby squad will be able to perform their best and get a gold medal,” Peter said this after presenting the state flag to the rugby squad at Eagles Rugby Club field here, Tuesday.

He said he was giving his full support for the team because they were also born from the Eagles Rugby Club which is located in Sandakan.

“I am confident that the Eagles Rugby Club Sandakan will be able to create more talented rugby players who will be able to represent us to compete in national and international games,” he said.

Meanwhile, the president of Eagles Rugby Club and Sabah Rugby Union, Vela Tan said he believed the Sabah Rugby Squad would be able to get gold at Sukma.

“We are aiming at winning gold because this squad have participated in various championships for exposure as well as to polish their skills in the game. They have also undergone four months of training at the centre,” he said.

Vela also thanked the president of SMC for his support for the Sabah Rugby Squad.
