Ensure information is true before spreading —Shafie

KOTA KINABALU: Ensure information integrity before spreading it willy-nilly on social media, urged Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.

Shafie said even though the new Malaysia strongly stressed on freedom and access to information, citizens must disseminate information with integrity as the widespread of wrong information could destroy a nation.

“Therefore, let us always make sure that any true and valid information must be disseminated while any untrue and invalid information is erased and ignored. Symptoms of false or defamatory news will actually have a major impact on our society,” advised Shafie in his speech which was delivered by Assistant Law and Native Affairs Minister Uda Sulai at the Sabah Zone 2018 Dakwah New Media Symposium launching ceremony at Wisma Muis here yesterday.

“This will result in a greater separation gap, the goodwill values will become more eroded. It will also involve self-respect and family. Therefore, be a smart social media user, society will continue to live in good values and thus harmony of religion, race and culture will be intact and solid,” he added at the event themed “Tak Pasti, Jangan Sebar” (If Unsure, Do not Spread).

He also urged the people to positively make major impacts on society through the new media or social platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook and Wechat.

“Now the development of a strong family institution is one of the key challenges that every nation in the world needs,” said the Chief Minister.

“Certainly these social media applications will be able to strengthen relationships not only between friends but also in a family,” he said.
