KOTA KINABALU: Members of the public are welcomed to attend the Borneo International Orchid Show (BIOS) 2018 which will showcase some of the world’s most spectacular original orchids.

The six-day event, organized by the Borneo Orchid Society Sabah (BOSS), will be held from September 21 to 27 at the Kota Kinabalu Community Centre.

BOSS president Datuk Seri Tengku Zainal Adlin revealed that the event would feature 52 classes of orchids, comprising over 30 different species.

“Some of the orchids are imported from Japan, Thailand, Myanmar, Singapore and West Malaysia,” Tengku Zainal said at a press conference here yesterday.

There will be 16 sections of orchids featured in the event, some of which are the Dendrobium species, Malaysian Phalaenopsis species, Paphiopedilum and many more.

He pointed out that the orchids displayed at the event are of ‘original’ form as opposed to the ‘hybrid’ ones, which are more commonly seen.

He added that the orchids in Sabah are among the most beautiful and rarely found orchids in the world.

Meanwhile, BOSS vice president Jerry Ong said competitions, comprising various categories would also be conducted.

“A total winning prize of RM40,000 is up for grabs,” he said.

Jerry added that the entrance fee for the event is RM2 while children and students in school uniform would not be charged.

About 10,000 people are expected to attend the event and Deputy Chief Minister cum Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Christina Liew is expected to officiate at the opening ceremony.
