Sabah cyclists bring home massive medal haul from APMG

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah riders June Fang and Anita Markus returned with an impressive medal collection from the inaugural Asia Pacific Masters Games (APMG) in Penang.

June won two gold in the Road Criterium and Cross Country Olympics events while Anita won three silver in Road Criterium, Cross Country Olympics and Mass Start Road Race.

“It was a proud moment for Malaysia to have the two ladies represent Malaysia and the Sabah State Cycling Associatio­n is looking forward to sending them to the next Asia Pacific Master Games in Korea 2022,” said the associatio­n secretary, Beatrice Lajawa, yesterday.

June competed in the 35-39 age group category while Anita participat­ed in the 30-34 age division.

Anita is a former Malaysia Games (Sukma) gold medallist in the Cross Country Olympics event in Negeri Sembilan in 2004.

For the record, Sabah Masters athletes also did well in taekwondo where Master Barry Voon, Josephine Kung and Ervin Ambu won gold.

Taekwondo also delivered silver from Ervin and Mujayal Ebno as well as bronze through Emmanuel Lim and Josephine as well as Voon and Mujayal.

The APMG taking place from September 8 to 15 is organised by the Internatio­nal Masters Games Associatio­n (IMGA). It is the first-ever Masters Games for the Asia-Pacific region.

Around 5,500 athletes from 64 nations are taking part in the APMG where 22 sports are being contested.
