AG's Chambers free from political pressure – Thomas
KUALA LUMPUR: The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) has been free from any form of political pressure since the change of government, says Attorney General Tommy Thomas.
In an interview with Malaysiakini about his first 100 days as the country's number one prosecutor, Thomas said that there had been no political interference in the AGC from the Prime Minister nor the Cabinet.
"They have all acted properly and correctly; the PM, the Cabinet, the ministers.
"They have left matters of law to me and the AGC. There is neither pressure nor interference," he was quoted as saying.
Thomas said he believed Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, whom he had been critical of in previous years for controlling the judiciary, was now a reformed Prime Minister.
"In my dealings, Tun has been right and proper.
"There's no doubt in my mind that the PM and the members of the Cabinet who I have dealt with genuinely believe in reform. So I can confirm that I am trying to be a reforming AG in a reforming government!" he added.
On the difficulties faced by his chambers, Thomas said the demand for prosecution was unprecedented.
"I would say that never in the history of the chambers has there been so much demand for prosecution, which is because of the past misdeeds that have accumulated over the years, problems that I've inherited," he said in reference to investigations and court proceedings involved in the 1MDB scandal.
