KOTA KINABALU: Golden boy Eugenius Lo bagged another gold medal in archery after edging Penang’s Khambeswaran Mohanaraja by one point in the compound men’s individual final at the 19th Malaysia Games in Perak, yesterday.

The 17-year-old student from KK High School shot 145 to claim his fourth gold medal at Universiti Teknologi Petronas in Seri Iskandar.

En route to the final, Eugenius beat Terengganu’s Mohamad Syafiq Md Ariffin, 144-143. The latter went on to win the bronze medal after beating his team mate Mohamad Saiful Adli Mat Zin, 143-140.

Earlier performances saw Eugenius win gold medals in the 70m, 50m and 30m events. He shot down the national record with a perfect score of 360 in the 30m. He also put his name to a new games record in the 70m.

Thanks to Eugenius, the archery squad now need only two gold medals to achieve the target and equal their haul at the 2016 SUKMA in Sarawak.

Team manager Paul Leong is hoping the two gold medals will come from today’s recurve team events.

“Hopefully, we can get the two gold medals tomorrow, otherwise we will have to try and get it in the compound team events on Friday,” he said.

In the compound women’s individual, Fatin Syazlin Mohd Sham lifted local pride after beating Nuraqilah Khairul from Johor, 143141. Sarawak’s Esther Yong Yin Ze beat her teammate Kho Yee Ting, 138-133 to win the bronze.
