OCBC Bank kicks off donation drive with RM20,000 for Shark Carnival

KOTA KINABALU: People from all walks of life will get to experience a host of activities at the inaugural Shark Carnival 2018, which will include The Shark Runner 2018, Shark Colouring Competitio­n Prize giving ceremony, Shark Exhibition and more related programmes.

The event, put together by Junior Chamber Internatio­nal Tanjung Aru (JCI Tanjung Aru) in collaborat­ion with OCBC Bank (Malaysia) Berhad), involves a fivekilome­tre run which will start at 6am on Sunday, September 30.

Among those taking part in the event will be staff from OCBC Kota Kinabalu branch, JCI Malaysia Area Sabah Members, Kota Kinabalu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KKCCCI) WWF Malaysia & Universiti Malaysia Sabah.

OCBC is kicking off the donation drive by contributi­ng RM20,000 which will go towards JCI Tanjung Aru’s efforts in their long term flagship project called “Say No to Shark Fin Soup”, with the aim of raising awareness of shark conservati­on and to stop the consumptio­n of shark fin soup.

According to the JCI Tanjung Aru president Chang Jen Nee the aim of the event was to raise awareness for shark conservati­on particular­ly among the children, youth and families.

“We hope that through this carnival, along with the colouring competitio­n, the younger generation will stop consuming shark fin soup.

“We are aiming to have at least 1,000 participan­ts to join us for this inaugural Shark Carnival in order to raise public awareness on shark conservati­on. We will kick off with a Shark run and also the prize giving ceremony for the coloring competitio­n. We hope many will come and join us to understand better the need of shark conservati­on and to ultimately stop having shark fin soups,” she said.
