Anglican Diocese launches anti-littering campaign

-

KOTA KINABALU: The Anglican Diocese of Sabah launched its anti-littering campaign with a ceremony led by Bishop Datuk Melter J. Tais at Wisma Anglican, Kota Kinabalu yesterday morning.

Inspired by the Kota Kinabalu City Council’s (DBKK) own “antilittering campaign” (Kempen Anti Kutu Sampah), the Diocese has decided to not only encourage its churches in Kota Kinabalu to participate in DBKK’s “Litter-Free Church” (Gereja Tanpa Sampah) certification initiative, but also to encourage Anglican churches throughout the state of Sabah and in Labuan to reduce their output of waste for environmental reasons as well as to increase the cleanliness of their premises.

“Cleanliness is important to Christians because we believe that our cleanliness is a reflection of our godliness,” Bishop Datuk Melter said.

“I also urge our churches to make the reduction of waste which leads to cleanliness a priority, because we have been given this wonderful earth as a gift from God and thus we have a responsibility to care for it.”

Wisma Anglican houses the headquarters of the Diocese and other key church bodies, and so it was apt that the Diocese’s campaign began with representatives from these bodies, led by Bishop Datuk Melter himself, placing recyclable materials into the new recycling bins provided outside the building. Student representatives of the All Saints’ Anglican Academy also participated in the ceremony.

A talk on caring for the environment was presented to the students at their Monday Assembly to raise awareness and educate them.

In addition, a “Care for the Environment” competition with cash prizes to be won has also been organised for the students to encourage them further in making the protection of the environment a priority.
