Labuan Corporation to takeover car parks management
LABUAN: Labuan Corporation (LC) will officially take over the car parks management here effective Oct 1 from its former investment arm LDA Holdings Sdn Bhd, after the latter incurred losses since 2016.
LDA has accumulated losses of more than RM80, 000 in less than three years.
Following the takeover, LC will be maintaining the ticketing system, which will be managed by its Enforcement Department.
LC will be streamlining followup management methods of the Over Parking Notice (OP), streamlining parking management reserve application method and streamlining and streamlining the method of motorcycles parking in the town centre safely and orderly, with additional 313 lots.
In announcing this at a joint press conference between LC and LDA yesterday, LC enforcement deputy director Musa Bariong said as a result of the takeover, LC would provide additional seven parking counters (Pondok Coupon Letak Kereta) in addition to the existing three counters and appoint more agents for the sale of daily and monthly parking coupons to motorists.
LC currently has a total of 2, 564 parking lots in the town centre, which is still insufficient and has triggered public outcry due to the increasing new registered vehicles daily.
It also has more than 2, 500 parking lots located at the outskirt of the town especially those at the industrial zones occupied by warehouses.
Musa said LC was providing a total of 485 new parking lots located at five areas of the old food court (33 lots), Jalan Wawasan (46 lots), next to Dorsett Grand Labuan (30 lots), Dataran Labuan (75 lots), Labuan Times Square (85 lots) and Lazenda with 183 lots.
The parking rate, which has not been reviewed for 23 years of RM0.50 per hour and RM0.70 for the subsequent hour will remain.
LDA Holdings management representative Eddie Herman said the surrender of the car parks management was made after taking into consideration the under-performance of the company in managing the car parks.
“The car parks management was well-managed prior to the privatisation exercise, but gradually recorded losses after the exercise was implemented on a 60:40 ratio in revenue of the parking lots.
“The company has not achieved a break-even point but continued making losses,” he said.
On the plight of the 18 parking attendants following the takeover, he said, two had been absorbed as LC staff, eight continued to be attached with LDA and the remaining would receive termination and layoff benefits.
LC surrendered the car parks management to LDA, when the latter was still its investment arm, in 2009.
