School wins Tuaran lantern festival contest

KOTA KINABALU: Kok Wah Chinese primary school (SJKC) at Talibong near Tamparuli, beat six other schools to win the 2018 Tuaran Pesta Tanglung competitio­n held at Tuaran town field recently.

The competitio­n comprised three segments - tanglung display, story-telling and march past.

Kok Wah was judged the overall winner.

The lantern festival was jointly organised by the Tuaran Lions Club and the newly-formed SinoKDM Branch of Tuaran Upko. Officiatin­g at the function was Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Wilfred Madius Tangau who is also the acting Upko president.

Also present were his wife Datin Seri Dr Jaina Sintian, Lions Club chairman Yong Vui Min and Upko branch chairman Terence Lee.

Tangau, who is also the member of parliament for Tuaran, in his speech praised the two organisati­ons for staging the event which was attended by about 1,000 people comprising not just Chinese but also non-Chinese and people from all walks of life.

The event, he added, was meaningful as culture and tourism went hand-in-hand, apart from contributi­ng towards racial harmony and unity.

The Trade and Industry Minister stated that the state government treats all communitie­s equally and this includes providing assistance to Chinese schools and associatio­ns.
