Police beef up security for tourists

- By Elton Gomes

KOTA KINABALU: The Royal Malaysian Police (RMP) is beefing up security, especially in Kota Kinabalu as the city centre is the main tourist destination in the country.

City police chief ACP Habibi Majinji said three elements were being used by the police to achieve the target, namely from the sea, air and land.

“To improve security in the state capital, and where tourism is concerned, we work and coordinate with other units in the RMP, namely the Marine Operation Force and the Police Air Wing Unit.

“Alhamdulillah, we have not received any cases such as kidnapping or serious cases towards our tourists who are on holiday in the state,” he said during the police monthly gathering at the Karamunsing police headquarters.

As most tourists will spend their holiday at resort islands around Kota Kinabalu, both the Marine Operation Force and the Police Air Wing Unit are constantly on patrol operations to provide security from the air and water.

“We also conduct land patrol operation in the town area and shopping malls with other enforcement agencies.

“This is to ensure that not only tourists but also city folks and locals feel safe when they carry on with their daily activities,” he said.

Meanwhile, Habibi said the police together with other enforcement agencies have been conducting numerous integrated operations against illegal immigrants in and around the state capital.

Habibi said illegal immigrants normally committed crimes such as theft, robbery and drugs around the state capital.

“Our main priority is to reduce crime rate in the state capital.

“I know it is not easy to achieve a zero crime rate but if we can lower the rates, I believe we have succeeded in our duties,” he said.
