Kindy teacher among latest two to fall for Macau, parcel scams

-

KUCHING: Police have received three more reports of scam cases on Wednesday that resulted in two victims losing a total of RM2,750.

Sarawak Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) head Supt Mustafa Kamal Gani Abdullah in a statement yesterday said two of the reports concerned Macau Scam while the other involved a parcel scam.

“One of the Macau Scam victims is an unemployed woman in Bintulu, who transferred RM900 to the account of a caller who claimed to be an officer from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC),” he said.

He said the caller told the victim that she was being investigated for money laundering and drug trafficking, and that she needed to transfer her money before her account was frozen by the authorities.

Mustafa said for the second Macau Scam case, the complainant did not suffer any financial losses but lodged a report for police to probe the matter.

The third case, he disclosed, involved a kindergarten teacher in Belaga who lost RM1,850 in a parcel scam to a person known to her as ‘Ben Marshall from Scotland, UK’.

“The scammer told the victim that he would be mailing her some gifts, but that she needed to assist him in paying for a socalled airport tax in order for the parcel to be sent to her.

“It was only after transferring the money to an account number provided by the suspect, that the woman realised she had been cheated,” said Mustafa, adding that investigation of the three cases is ongoing.
