KOTA KINABALU: The Penampang Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry aims to raise RM50,000 to help the Cleft Lip and Palate Association of Sabah (Clapas) realise its dream of reaching out to every cleft child and family in Sabah.

President Datuk Robert Ling said his chamber would be organising a charity bazaar on December 9 to raise the funds.

“The charity bazaar will be held on December 9 at Bundusan (near Welcome Seafood Restaurant) from 7.30am to 3pm,” Robert told reporters at a press conference on Friday.

Clapas is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation comprising parents of cleft lip and/or cleft palate children, medical professionals and members of the public dedicated to help support and provide medical aid to underprivileged cleft children born in Sabah.

Present at the press conference was Clapas chairman Dr Charles Lee, who disclosed that the association was formed just recently in February.

“This association was formed in February this year. We launched this association to help children who cannot afford repair of cleft lip,” he said, adding that these surgeries would usually be conducted at private hospitals.

“We need funds. One case costs between RM12,000 to RM15,000,” he said.

He also expressed his gratitude towards the Penampang Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry for having such a big heart in their willingness to help Clapas.

“We are very happy to have the Penampang Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry as part of this awareness campaign,” Charles said.

He revealed that Clapas will be organising its first-ever Cleft Fair on October 13 to 14 at Suria Sabah Shopping Mall.

Among the main highlights of the fair is the Cleft Aid Talent Show, which will feature students below 17-yearsold showcase their musical and artistic talents.

Also present at the event was Charity Bazaar 2018 organising chairman Wong Yoke Sim and Clapas vice-chairman Teddy Chin.
