RM2.5 mln drug bust in LD, local arrested
LAHAD DATU: A local man in his 30’s was arrested by the police here and 50 packets of substance believed to be syabu (methamphetamine) worth some RM2.5 million were seized from his vehicle.
Lahad Datu police chief ACP Nasri Mansor disclosed at a press conference here yesterday the man was nabbed during an operation conducted by narcotics unit from the Sabah police contingent and Lahad Datu police at the parking lot in front of a building in Bandar Sri Perdana on Wednesday.
Nasri said that prior to the arrest, the suspect who is believed to be involved in illegal drug abuse and trafficking activities was seen unloading a large bag from the rear of his four wheel drive (4WD) vehicle.
When approached by the police, he said, the suspect tried to flee but police managed to detain after a slight tussle.
“Inspection of the bag revealed 25 packets of yellow plastic packets with the wording ‘Daguanyin’ containing a substance believed to be syabu. When the vehicle was inspected, the team found another bag which contained another 25 packets containing a substance believed to be syabu,” he said.
According to Nasri, the substance weighed 51,917 grams with an estimated worth of RM2,500,000 based on the current street price.
Nasri said, a Rolex watch worth RM141,600 was also seized along with the 4WD vehicle.
“The suspect is currently remanded for further investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Further investigation will be carried out to ascertain if the drugs were for the local market and to uncover other drug trafficking activities involving the arrest,” he said.
Meantime, Nasri thanked the public for their cooperation in assisting the police combat drug related activities and reiterated that the police welcomes any information the public conveys to fight crimes.
Nasri added that the police are looking seriously into the illegal drug activities and the problems it causes and will increase efforts to curb this menace.
