TAWAU: Hospital Tawau Opthalmology Department in collaboration with Tawau Municipal Counsil, Rotary Club of Tawau, and Lion Club of Tawau Central will organize an eye screening for free in conjunction with the World Sight Day 2018.

The event will be held on October 13 at the back yard of Tawau Municipal Counsil building from 8am to 12.30pm.

The eye screening will be held among the citizens of Tawau to detect any eye diseases. Th eye screening hopes to create awareness among the citizens on the importance of detecting eye diseases at early stage to prevent blindness.

World Sight Day is an international day of awareness held annually by The International Agency of Preventable Blindness (IAPB) to focus attention on the global issue of avoidable blindness and visual impairment.

A survey conducted by the National Eye Survey II, among 41,300 people aged 50 years and above in 2014 in Malaysia, 11,300 people were detected to have eye diseases - cataract, refractive error, and diabetic retinopathy are a few reasons why people have blurring of vision and subsequently blindness.

This year, “Eye care everywhere” has been chosen as the theme by IAPB to increase the awareness and to create the importance of eye’s health.

“We hope through the event, we can improve these issues. Health screening also will be done for the citizens such as screening for hypertension, diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidemia. Come and join us and bring your family, relatives, friends and neighbours along for free health checkup and eye screening. There will be counseling session for nutrition and pharmacy as well. Don’t miss out.”
