Sabah’s Joffey Jolly bound for Turkey armwrestling meet
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah’s top arm wrestler Joffey Jolly will take part in the 40th World Armwrestling and 21st World ParaArmwrestling Championships in Antalya, Turkey.
Joffey is one of the five athletes in the national squad slated for the championships, which will be held at PGS Hotels Kremlin Palace from October 13 to 21.
Joffey’s father-cum-coach, Jolly Johnson, said he was proud of his 25-year-old son for being selected for another international assignment with the Malaysian squad.
He added that Joffey was well prepared and in the best shape for the championship where he will be competing in he 65kg left and right hand categories.
“His current condition and form suggests that he will give a good fight to whoever he will face...I’m quite confident of that.
“He has been training regularly, including intensively for the last month. He is in good shape and I hope he will give his all and bring home glory,” said Jolly, who is also Sabah Arm Wrestling Association deputy president, yesterday.
Meanwhile, the rest of the national squad are Mohd Nizar Yusof (men’s senior 75kg left and right hand category), Mohd Safuan Asif (Junior Under-21 60kg left and right hand category), Kenny Choo (Grand Master 75kg left and right hand) and sole female athlete Abigail Kee (Female Junior Under-18 category).
Hosted by the Turkish Body Building, Fitness and Armwrestling Federation, over 1,500 contestants from more than 45 countries were expected at the championship.
Joffey, who hails from Kampung Malawa, left for Kuala Lumpur yesterday before leaving with the rest of the squad for Turkey today.
