ALOR SETAR: A student has postponed his studies at the Selangor Islamic University College (KUIS) indefinitely to look after his mother who is suffering from stage four breast cancer since December last year.

Mohd Khairul Adhar Mat Isa, 25, a third semester student pursuing his bachelor degree of Al-Quran and Al-Sunnah with Communications, said although he made the decision with heavy heart, he was determined to go home and looking after his mother, Siti Sa'dah Hussain, 62, due to his love and sense of responsibilities.

“My father passed away three years ago and I take over the responsibility of looking after my mother. ..When will I be back studying, I really don't know. ..and as of now I need to focus on my mother as she is getting weaker by the days.

“My mother can't either move or talk and entirely dependent on me to meet her daily needs such as eating, drinking and medication,” he told reporters at his home in Taman Permai, Jalan Langgar, here, after a visit from Cancer Survivors Malaysia founder Zuraini Kamal, yesterday.

Mohd Khairul Adhar said his mother, a former supervisor at a boarding school here, was diagnosed with breast cancer in December last year during a health check at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital (HSB) that found a tumour on the left breast.

“Since then, the cancer has spread to her brain, causing my mother to suffer seizures often that left her bedridden at home. Furthermore, doctors also said there was no particular treatment can be given because of her poor health,” he said.

“We have been relying on my father's and her monthly pension worth RM2,000 to purchase daily necessities as well as special milk and disposable diapers, apart from servicing my mother's loan repayment instalment,” said Mohd Khairul Adhar adding that he would appreciate public contributions to ease the family's financial burden.
