Indonesian jailed for possessing Daesh images, video

KUALA LUMPUR: An Indonesian labourer was sentenced to 18 months jail by the High Court here yesterday for having images and video on the Daesh terrorist group on his mobile phone.

Judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali handed down the sentence on Mohd Al-Arshy Mus Budiono, 24, who changed his plea to guilty when the case came up for mention yesterday, to be served from the date of his arrest, which was Jan 17 this year.

Before handing down the sentence, Mohd Nazlan advised Mohd Al-Arshy, to be more cautious and to not be involved in unlawful activities in the country.

“Offence relating to terrorism is serious. It can threaten the country’s security, undermine the country’s parliament­ary democracy and endanger the rakyat’s future and that of the future generation,” he said.

Mohd Al-Arshy, who is from East Java, was charged with possession of five images and nine videos on the Daesh terrorist group on his mobile phone at Restoran Klasik Hijau, Jalan Awan Hijau, Taman Overseas Union, Brickfield­s, here at 3 pm on Jan 17 this year.

The charge was made under Section 130JB(1)(a) of the Penal Code, which provides an imprisonme­nt for up to seven years, or fine and forfeiture of the items concerned, upon conviction.

Earlier, during mitigation, lawyer Zaini Bakar, representi­ng Mohd Al-Arshy, said her client (she) kept the images and videos for his own viewing.
