Boxer Muhammad Farkhan to pursue world top 20 ranking next year

JOHOR BAHRU: National profession­al boxer and Asian boxing champion, Muhammad Farkhan Haron is hunting to join the top 20 world best boxers next year.

The title holder of World Boxing Council (WBC) Asia Light Heavyweigh­t and Asian Boxing Federation (ABF) Cruiserwei­ght Championsh­ip said he is now ranked 39th in the world.

He said to ensure his target is achieved, early preparatio­ns would be made in Thailand for a month and then to Uzbekistan.

“I will defend my title in December, opponent still unknown, waiting for name from Asian Boxing Associatio­n while the fight this weekend’s for JB Mayor’s Cup is more for my ranking.

“This is because my target next year is to be in the world top 20 best boxers, now I am an Asian champion and my next target is the internatio­nal title,” he told reporters yesterday.

He told reporters after a media conference on the 2018 Johor Bahru City Council Mayor’s Cup Championsh­ip which enters its second edition.

In the championsh­ip, more than 100 amateur and profession­al as well as domestic and foreign boxers from Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Kazakstan and Uzbekistan will be taking part in the twoday event starting this Saturday.

About 80 per cent of the one thousand tickets available have been taken up for the tournament at Dewan Muafakat, Adda Heights, Johor Bahru. - Bernama
