KOTA KINABALU: Sabah athletes added two gold medals to the tally after another fruitful outing at the 20th Malaysia Deaf Games (Sopma) in Perak yesterday.

Victory from the bowling squad in Ipoh added glitter to the day, while another gold medal from the athletics squad ensured a glorious outing for the State contingent.

The two gold medals added to Sabah’s earlier haul of three gold medals won by the athletics squad in previous days.

The gold in bowling came from Jovinia Danduan, Zuriana Roslan and Normisha Nathera Mackery who won the women’s trio final late Thursday night. The other gold medal yesterday came from the women’s 4x100m relay squad.

Sabah also won three silver medals in bowling events yesterday along with another from track and field events. The athletics squad also won silver medals through Atasha Faqeha Juakim (women’s long jump) and Azlan Kuste (men’s 800m) on Thursday.

Another medal in bowling came from Zuriana, who won bronze in the women’s all events.

Meanwhile, Sabah will have a chance for more glory as the curtain falls on the six-day games today when they clash with Kelantan in the football final in Ipoh.

The match kicks off at 8.30am and Sabah are going all out to try and win the ‘mother of all gold’.

En route to the final, Sabah had to slug it out to edge Negeri Sembilan 4-3. Earlier, they thrashed host team Perak 10-0 to book their spot in the semis.

A total of seven sporting disciplines are being contested in this year’s games, namely track and field events, football, tenpin bowling, badminton, table tennis, swimming and futsal. The games, which kicked off on Monday, are scheduled to conclude on October 20.
