KOTA KINABALU: Former chief minister Tan Sri Harris Mohd Salleh contributed 1,500 Gaharu and other various species of exotic trees to the Sabah Golf and Country Club (SGCC) yesterday.

The contribution was to support the tree planting campaign organised by the golf club.

“This campaign is not just about planting trees. Among our objectives is to conserve Sabah’s environment and biodiversity as well as to increase the number of tree population in the course by planting indigenous fruit trees.

“We are grateful and touched by the contribution from Tan Sri Harris. It is very meaningful and will certainly help to make our tree planting campaign a success,” said SGCC president Shiak Vui Ming.

“We hope that someday we can enjoy the chirping of various species of birds, especially from the Hornbill and Kakak Tua families that can be seen flying around the course,” he added.

Meanwhile, in a brief lunch ceremony at SGCC, Harris said he was impressed with the noble act of the club’s Supreme Council members in organising the campaign.

“Such a campaign should be fully supported and I hope other clubs will play a role in safeguarding our environment.

“By planting these trees, especially Gaharu, which have high commercial value, it is hoped that when the trees mature in the future it will provide high economic returns for the sustainability of the club,” he said.

Also present were Sabah Golf Association president Datuk George Bandusena and SGA Supreme Council Committee members.
