Sabah finish 2nd in Deaf Games

Sabah concluded their campaign by adding another gold medal in the final day of the 20th Malaysia Deaf Games (Sopma) in Perak yesterday.

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah concluded their campaign by adding another gold medal in the final day of the 20th Malaysia Deaf Games (Sopma) in Perak yesterday.

A gold medal from bowling events courtesy of Spencer Soo Kok Heng made it six for Sabah as the state athletes celebrated a second place finish in the overall medals tally.

The state contingent also bagged seven silver and eight bronze medals, while Federal Territory won seven gold medals, 11 silver and five bronze, to claim the overall crown.

Terengganu were third with five gold, three silver and one bronze, followed by Johor in fourth (5-1-5), Penang fifth (47-6), Sarawak sixth (4-5-2) and Kedah in seventh (3-2-5).

Perak finished eighth (32-3) followed by Kelantan (3-1-1) and Selangor (2-2-8), while Melaka (0-1-2), Negeri Sembilan (0-0-1) and Perlis (00-1) finished in 11th, 12th and 13th place respective­ly.

Among the 14 participat­ing contingent­s, Pahang were the only ones who failed to win a single medal.

Spencer, who is also president of the Sabah Deaf Sports Associatio­n, won his gold medal in the men’s masters event, while Jovinia Danduan claimed the bronze in the women’s category.

Jovinia also won gold in the women’s trio with Zuriana Roslan and Normisha Nathera Mackery on Thursday.

The other gold medals came from the men’s 4x400m relay squad, women’s 4x400m relay, women’s 4x100m relay and Jesson Noel in shot put.

Meanwhile, Sabah missed their chance on winning the “mother of all gold” after losing 2-0 to Kelantan in the football final yesterday.

En route to the final, Sabah edged Negeri Sembilan 4-3. Before that, they registered a 100 drubbing over hosts team Perak to claim their spot in the semis.

A total of seven sporting discipline­s were contested in this year’s games, namely track and field events, football, tenpin bowling, badminton, table tennis, swimming and futsal.
