KOTA KINABALU: Veteran journalist Chuah Kim Huat has officially retired and returned to his hometown in Penang, yesterday (Oct 20), ending his 33-year career in the newspaper industry.

He came to work as a restaurant captain in Kota Kinabalu in 1985, before joining Asia Times where he worked as a court reporter cum editor for over three decades till October this year.

Chuah has also been actively involved in Kota Kinabalu Journalists Association (KKJA) since the inception of the association in 1992.

He has been the secretary, treasurer and executive secretary of KKJA, and has taken part in organizing every activity and event held by the association.

Chuah said he would be spending more time to exercise and taking care of his health after returning to Penang.

“I may come back to Kota Kinabalu to attend the Press Night next year,” he said to KKJA chairman Yong Ted Phen who was at the airport to bid him farewell yesterday.

Chuah was also one of the recipients who were honoured with the Long Service Award presented by KKJA last year in conjunction with the association's 25th anniversary celebration.

The association is currently compiling the stories contributed by the recipients into a book. The book will allow the public to understand the work and lives of journalists and editors.

Yong hoped that the book could be published around August next year.
