Scouts urged to regain glory after 111 years
LABUAN: Scout and girl scouts must regain its glory as the mustjoin voluntary body in the country as they are universal movements.
Labuan Scout Council President Datuk Seri Mohd Alias Abd Rahman said the operational cost for both movements is relatively low as all activities are carried out voluntarily.
“The scout movement should be given a new breath with emphasis on strong discipline and commitment, if it wants to regain its glory as the must join non-governmental organisation (NGO) and voluntary body,” he said at the closing of the World's 61st On-Air Jamboree and 22nd Labuan Main Station Internet Jamboree at SMK Pantai here yesterday.
He said the Scout movement was established in 1907 or 111 years ago by its founder Robert Baden-Powell and in Labuan, the movement is 85 years old now.
Alias said the movement was still relevant and able to fulfil the young generation's aspiration.
“The scout movement was very popular in 1960's to 80's with a high number of students taking part in the movement and we strongly believe we can regain its glory.
“The scout movement is able to survive for a long time based on the concept of brotherhood practice regardless of rank, descent and religion in line with the Love Malaysia concept that emphasises the importance of unity and the spirit of love, regardless of political ideology,” he added.
Alias said as a voluntary movement to support formal education system, it was hoped the Scouts Association of Malaysia especially Labuan scout, would be able to work together with local authorities and relevant government departments in ensuring the objective of producing high quality of human capital was achievable. – Bernama
