Head of State attends installati­on of 29th Sultan of Kedah

ALOR SETAR: Sultan Sallehuddi­n Ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah has been installed as the 29th Sultan of Kedah in a ceremony steeped in tradition at the Balairung Seri (Throne Room) of Istana Anak Bukit here.

Following the installati­on, His Royal Highness will henceforth be addressed as ‘Al Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddi­n Ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah’.

The installati­on was held in the full tradition and custom of the Kedah Malay Sultanate, a historic ceremony considerin­g that the last installati­on was held almost six decades ago, in 1959, when Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah ascended the Kedah throne.

The event was attended by the rulers of various states and Sabah Head of State Tun Juhar Mahiruddin and his consort Toh Puan Norlidah R M Jasni along with Sarawak Head of State Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud and Toh Puan Ragad Kurdi Taib.

Among the distinguis­hed foreign royal guests were the Crown Prince of Brunei Darussalam Al-Muhtadee Billah and his consort Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Sarah Salleh, who represente­d the Sultan of Brunei Darussalam.

Also present were Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali; Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and her husband Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim; and Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Tun Mahathir and his wife, Tok Puan Norzieta Zakaria.
