Vacant land turned into beautiful park for locals, tourists

SANDAKAN: Before being appointed as the Sandakan Municipal Council (SMC) president Datuk Peter Hii Chang Lik had sponsored RM1 million to upgrade a vacant plot of land at Taman Grandview to create a clean and beautiful park.

The programme was approved by the SMC Town Decoration Committee on March 12, 2015, with Hii as the sponsor of the landscape and maintenance work at Taman Grandview.

Hill stated that the programme in 2015 was for the planting of trees, flowers, and for the construction of a jogging pathway as well as drainage system and a retaining wall.

His initiative in planting various flora and fauna has made the empty land at Taman Grandview a beautiful recreational park, in line with the local authority’s effort in preserving the environment.

One of the residents at Taman Grandview said the empty space at Taman Grandview used to look bleak with bushes that were not maintained.

“After Datuk Peter Hii developed this land, it has now become a recreational park that is beautiful, with cheerful landscape and clean surrounding,” he said.

Its residents said Hii’s effort in developing the empty land had made the recreational park a destination for recreational activities for the locals as well as tourists.

After being appointed as the president of SMC, Peter Hii inspected the recreational park that he had created, while inspecting SMC’s personnel trimming branches of trees planted at the park.

He then said the beauty of the landscape did not rely only on the flowers, but also the trees that could shade the area.

“Trees that are planted at this park are also adding to the beauty of the recreational park here. Locals are now making this place as a recreational spot and a place to exercise and jog.

“My aim when I first suggested upgrading this empty space was to fulfill the long-term need of the locals and at the same time assist the government in achieving its objective to have a beautiful town. We want Sandakan to have beautiful recreational parks,” he said.

Thus, he asked for all parties, especially the locals, to always preserve and to take care of the landscape of Taman Grandview, so that it will remain beautiful and attractive to the locals.

He also wanted the locals to always ensure the cleanliness of the park.
