Police welfare will be refined to avoid corruption – Azis

-

KUALA LUMPUR: The Government will look into and refine the welfare issues of the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) in an effort to curb corruptionrelated problems and misuse of power from continuing to spread in the security agency.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Mohd Azis Jamman said the issue of welfare, if it was not taken care of, would encourage policemen to be trapped in unhealthy activities.

"For example, if our children are abandoned at home and we do not see to their welfare, imagine what will happen to them. It is the same with the policemen, if their welfare at home is not looked after, barracks full of uncertainties and others, imagine them going out to the field in a stressed state.

"Sometimes this pressure exposes (them) to bribery and corruption," he told reporters after attending the PDRM Personnel Corruption-free Integrity Strengthening Seminar here yesterday.

Also present were InspectorGeneral of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun and his deputy, Tan Sri Noor Rashid Ibrahim.

Mohd Azis said the fight against corruption should be done holistically without having to point a finger at anyone.

According to statistics from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), 149 PDRM personnel were arrested for bribery in 2017 and as of August this year, 69 members had been detained.

He said based on the MACC 2009 Act, the major corruption offences were demanding or receiving bribes, giving bribes, submitting false claims and abuse of power.
