Mini tourney to kick off before KDMM Charity Cup

KOTA KINABALU: There will be a mini tournament for all to enjoy at the Malaysia Kadazandus­un Murut Organisati­on (KDMM) Football League Charity Cup Match at the Keningau Stadium on December 8.

Joint organising chairman Henry Saimpon said the mini tournament will involve all teams except Papar and Keningau.

“While waiting for the Charity Cup match between Papar and Keningau which is scheduled for kick-off at 4.30pm, there will be 30 teams competing in the KDMM Cup Football Carnival Tournament beginning 7am.

“It is a seven-a-side tournament and will run in a ‘Double KnockOut’ format,” said Henry when met after chairing the team managers’ meeting at the Likas Stadium on Wednesday.

Teams will be divided into Winners/Losers groups based on the results of their first matches.

The champion of the Winners’ group will receive RM5,000, followed by RM3,000 for runnerup and RM1,000 for joint third place, while the champion of the Losers’ group will walk away with RM4,000, followed by RM2,000 for runner-up and RM1,000 for joint third place.

There will also be a championof-champions match where the winner will receive RM5,000 and runner-up RM1,000.

Aside from the mini tournament, there will also be some track events including the 4x100m and 4x400m men’s open competitio­n. There will also be cash prizes up for grabs including RM2,000 for the champion, RM1,500 for runner-up, RM1,000 for third place and RM800 for fourth.

“At the same time, there will also be a blood donation campaign where donors will receive a free KDM Malaysia T-Shirt,” Henry said.

Registrati­on for the track events is free of charge but teams must confirm their entry on or before November 15.

There will also be lucky draw prizes for spectators to win including three motorcycle­s, 20 bicycles and hampers.

“The football carnival and track events tournament is something new to the KDMM Football League Tournament and the prizes offered now make the total well over RM300,000, so thank you very much to KDMM president Datuk Peter Anthony,” said Henry, who is also KDMM Youth Chief.

A total of 32 district teams will be competing in the KDMM Football League Tournament organised by KDMM with the cooperatio­n of the Youth and Sports Ministry.

Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Frankie Poon, who is also joint organising chairman, is expected to officiate at the Charity Cup match.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal is the tournament’s patron while Peter is president.
