Army veteran named top blood donor in Kapit

KAPIT: Sergeant (Rtd) Ari M S Maniam was named the top blood donor here with 106 pints for the year 2017.

He was one of 116 blood donors in 2017 to receive certificat­es of appreciati­on.

Assistant Minister of Water Supply Datuk Liwan Lagang presented Ari with the most prestigiou­s and highest Malaysian Red Crescent ‘Diamond Certificat­e and Medal’ for his extraordin­ary selfless humanitari­an efforts to save lives.

The occasion was MRC Kapit’s 3-in-1 function last Saturday; of celebratin­g World Red Crescent Day, present certificat­es to regular blood donors, and enrollment of Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) held at the civic centre here. Ari, 58, is a veteran soldier originatin­g from Johor but now lives in Song. He began to donate blood in 1979.

“I will continue to donate blood because I feel it is the best way to help people in dire need. I used to donate blood at Kapit Hospital once every four months. Now, I do it at Song Health Clinic,” said.

Datin Rosnie Bilang (Liwan’s wife), a political secretary to chief minister Nicholas Kudi Jantai, chairman of MRC Kapit Dr Sia Tih Kong, Bukit Mabong District Officer Douglas Pungga, Kapit SAO Philomena Asin, First Aid instructor Ayong Andam, and Nursing Superinten­dent Evelyn Biju were among those present at the function.
