UMS student breaks her legs in three-floor fall at hostel

-

KOTA KINABALU: A 21-year-old student from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) broke both her legs when she fell three floors from the balcony of a female hostel on Tuesday.

Lee Miao Lynn, a third-year medical degree student from Pulau Pinang, was said to be trying to retrieve her towel from railings at the balcony on the 10th floor of the hostel when she slipped and fell and landed on a roof on the seventh floor.

A friend who witnessed the incident immediately informed auxiliary police and the university management before she was taken to Likas Hospital where she was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.

Kota Kinabalu police chief ACP Habibi Majinji said police investigation revealed the incident happened around 10.30am at one of the female hostels when the victim was believed to have climbed over the balcony to retrieve her towel.

“The girls often hang their towels on the balcony railings as there is more sunlight in that area. Police suspected that the girl’s towel was dangling over the railings after it was blown by the wind.

“She tried to retrieve it but was believed to have lost her grip and fell from the tenth floor of the hostel and landed on the roof on the seventh floor.”

Habibi said a student heard a loud bang and when she went to look, saw the victim lying on the roof.

“She managed to wave to her friend for help,” said Habibi.

The student was taken to the Likas Hospital and doctors confirmed that she broke her legs.

“She is under doctors’ supervision and is in good health,” he said.

Habibi said the incident was an accident as there was no foul play involved or suicide attempt.
