Breast cancer awareness program for students

KOTA KINABALU: Kinabalu Pink Ribbon (KPR) recently conducted a breast cancer awareness program for Forms 3 and 4 students of SM Lok Yuk in Likas.

Dr. Anita Boay, a medical practition­er from a private clinic, also KPR’s Technical Advisor, gave a one hour interactiv­e talk with students about breast health and the importance of early education about the life threatenin­g disease.

Commending the attendance of not just the female but male students to the talk, she said they could play a role as ambassador­s as they spread the knowledge gained to their mother, sisters, aunts, other women and eventually their wives when they marry. Earlier on Unis Hasnah Yabi, a breast cancer survivor for 22 years together with Laura Bazan shared their journeys and advised women to do regular breast examinatio­n, for early detection could save life.

Meanwhile, Nancy Tham, KPR’s president said the associatio­n would intensify its breast cancer awareness campaigns to organisati­ons, colleges, schools, villages and where opportunit­y calls.

“We want to reach out to the community as much as we could,” she added.

Also attending the event were form teachers of the Lok Yuk Secondary School led by Nur Iszuani binti Ishak, Guidance and Counsellin­g teacher, KPR immediate past president Annie Chin, past president Hajah Natrah Datuk Arif, exco members and volunteers from the associatio­n.
