Vice prin­ci­pal wins fourth place in Astro singing com­pe­ti­tion

KOTA KINABALU: Tenom-born Saba­han Wes­ley Liew Kuok Yit won fourth place in the 18th Astro Clas­sic Golden Melody Singing Com­pe­ti­tion.

Liew, 48, also won the Most Pop­u­lar Award at the grand fi­nal held at the Arena of Stars, Re­sorts World Gent­ing on Novem­ber 3.

“I wish to thank Saba­hans for their sup­port.

“I had friends from Sabah, West Malaysia and even Sin­ga­pore show­ing up at the grand fi­nal to give me moral sup­port,” he said.

Since the grand fi­nal, Liew said he had re­ceived over 500 text mes­sages con­grat­u­lat­ing him.

He was, how­ever, dis­ap­pointed for let­ting his sup­port­ers down for not win­ning the top three spots in the com­pe­ti­tion.

Liew ad­mit­ted that it was the pres­sure of the com­pe­ti­tion that had af­fected his per­for­mance.

“The past three weeks were real phys­i­cal tests due to the non­stop re­hearsals and learn­ing the songs.”

None­the­less, Liew thanked Astro for giv­ing him the op­por­tu­nity to be part of the Astro Clas­sic Golden Melody Singing Com­pe­ti­tion and the men­tors for their guid­ance.

The vice prin­ci­pal of Beau­fort Mid­dle School also thanked his col­leagues and board of gov­er­nors for their un­der­stand­ing and sup­port as well.

He is not giv­ing up be­ing an ed­u­ca­tor any­time soon though, de­spite his mu­sic ca­reer.

“Like I said, singing is my dream. But ed­u­ca­tion is some­thing I aspire to do as a life­time ca­reer.”

Mov­ing on, Liew will be tak­ing on com­mer­cial work for a lo­cal bev­er­age man­u­fac­turer and beauty prod­ucts.

He has pre­vi­ously filmed a prop­erty com­mer­cial for Mah Sing Group.

Liew will also be film­ing an­other singing show which airs on AEC Chan­nel 301 or 306, from 8.30pm to 10pm ev­ery Satur­day.
