Man jailed for stealing laptop, Singapore dollars

-

KOTA KINABALU: A man was sentenced to 14 months jail by the Magistrate's Court here yesterday for stealing a laptop and 20 Singapore dollars.

Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie imposed the sentence on Muminhan Muslimin after he pleaded guilty to stealing the items from an office at Jalan Pintas on November 4.

The accused was convicted under Section 380 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine, upon conviction.

In a separate case, the same court set December 13 for remention of a case of a man charged with stealing a fibreglass boat.

The magistrate fixed the date for the case of Anas Hassim, 26, pending instruction from the deputy public prosecutor's office, after the complainant in the case decided not to proceed with the case against the accused.

The 76-year-old complainant cum boat owner, who was given an opportunity to say something in court, said that he wanted to withdraw his report against the accused after being informed that the accused is allegedly suffering from a mental illness.

Apart from that, the accused's mother, who was also present and asked to say something in court, said that her son (the accused) is suffering from the illness since almost a year ago.

The unrepresented accused who denied stealing the boat from under a house at Kampung Tanjung Aru Lama at 10.45 am on November 6, was released on RM1,000 bail with two local sureties, pending disposal of the case.
