Attempted bomb attack at home of senior Greek prosecutor

-

ATHENS: Greek police yesterday defused a bomb left outside of the Athens home of a controversial senior prosecutor, a police source said.

Supreme Court deputy prosecutor Isidoros Dogiakos in 2013 had overseen the high-profile investigation that put leading members of the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party on trial following the murder of an anti-fascist musician.

Dogiakos was also accused by the media of trying to quell a scandal involving bribes allegedly paid to Greek officials by the German group Siemens.

Dogiakos told AFP the device was placed ‘in a pressure cooker and hidden in the trunk of a motorcycle’ parked in front of his house.

The police source said it was discovered after officers received a warning during the night of an imminent explosion in the street in telephone calls to two media outlets.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Police cordoned off the area and warned residents, including Dogiakos, who was asleep as his home, not to leave their homes.

The prosecutor told AFP he had never been the target of death threats.

The methods used in yesterday’s attempted bomb attack recall those employed by the Conspiracy of Fire Nuclei anarchist group.

Emerging in 2010, the group, a dozen of whose members are serving prison terms, is on a US list of terrorist organisations.

The group last year mailed an explosive device that injured a secretary at the International Monetary Fund in Paris.

Non-fatal attacks targeting centres of power have been common in Greece in recent years, often blamed on anarchists or far-left groups.
