10 suspects detained over theft of bird’s nests
PAPAR: Police have arrested 10 men, including a foreigner, after they injured a security guard and stole bird’s nests from a bird’s house at the Papar Middle School here last Saturday.
The incident happened when the suspects managed to climb over the fence of the school to enter the bird’s house around 3am on Nov 17.
A security guard spotted the suspects and when he went to investigate he was confronted by three of the suspects armed with a fish gun, a machete and a kerambit.
The masked men hit the security guard with an iron rod before tying his hands and forcing him down on the ground.
The security guard managed to free himself about an hour later after all the suspects had left the area.
District police chief DSP Batholomew Ak Umpit said police apprehended all the suspects in Kota Kinabalu on Nov 8 following a police report lodged by the security guard.
“Investigation revealed the suspects were involved in several burglary cases and have been remanded for further investigation,” he told at a press conference at the Papar police headquarters yesterday.
Batholomew added that about 500 grams of bird’s nest and several items were confiscated from the suspects.
The police also believed to have solved six cases following the arrest of the suspects while continuous investigation is still ongoing.
The suspects, between 24 and 44 years old, had criminal records and tested positive for syabu, he said.
They will be investigated under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code and Section 15 (1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
