UTM targets 80% of grads finding jobs

JOHOR BAHRU: About 80 per cent of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) graduates, particularly from its Engineering (Nuclear) Bachelor programme, are expected to secure jobs six months after going out into the world.

UTM Faculty of Chemical and Energy Engineering, Dean Prof Dr Mohd Ghazali Nawawi, said the goal was set based on a survey of graduates in the field.

“With the review of the curriculum recently, we are also hoping that the percentage (of graduates securing jobs) will continue to improve,” he told a press conference after launching the International Nuclear, Science Technology and Engineering Conference 2018 (iNuSTEC 2018) in UTM, Skudai yesterday.

Mohd Ghazali said the target is achievable as the academic programme designed by the university is not only suitable for Malaysia, but also other countries according to market demand.

“The programme (curriculum) has been reviewed with the involvement of all the stakeholders, including nuclear experts, so that it is relevant not only to work in a nuclear plant in this country but also in other related fields,” he said, adding that the nuclear industry is a very broad field.

UTM is the only local university to offer such a programme which was started in 2012.

iNuSTEC 2018 saw about 200 academicians from local universities engaging in discussions related to the nuclear field.
