West Brom move second by seeing off Ipswich

-

LONDON: West Brom claimed a 2-1 win at bottom club Ipswich on Friday to move second in the Championship behind pacesetters Norwich.

Former Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez opened the scoring in the 26th minute, with Harvey Barnes putting the game out of the hosts' reach at Portman Road 13 minutes from time, rendering Kayden Jackson's late strike just a consolation.

The Baggies were the better side and have now scored 39 goals this season, 10 more than any other team in the English second division.

"I'm very pleased with myself but the main thing is we've got three points," Rodriguez told Sky Sports.

"We're still disappointed in some of what we do at times, but there's more to come from us."

League leaders Norwich will be looking to extend their twopoint lead over Darren Moore's men when they visit Swansea on Saturday.

Rodriguez slotted the away side in front after Kieran Gibbs had headed the ball back across goal.

The 20-year-old Barnes has been a revelation this season for West Brom, and having earlier hit the post, found the bottom corner in the 77th minute.

The result boosts West Brom's bid to earn immediate promotion back to the Premier League with a second straight victory following a winless run of three games. - AFP
