Nine of Borneo Post journalist­s receive Kinabalu Shell Press Awards

KOTA KINABALU: Nine of The Borneo Post reporters received awards and merits at the Kinabalu Shell Press Awards 2018 events held here on Saturday.

Three reporters from their sister companies, Utusan Borneo and See Hua Daily News, also received awards.

The Borneo Post received the Environmen­tal Journalism Award with three articles by Mariah Doksil, entitled ‘Sabahans to Make Difference in Oil Palm Plantation,' ‘Plantation Commits to Producing Sustainabl­e Palm Oil' and ‘Not All Work and No Play in Plantation.'

The local daily also received merits in News Reporting as well as Business & Economic Reporting, by two teams comprising Elton Gomes, Jenne Lajiun, Chok Sim Yee, Fiqah Roslan and Neil Brian Joseph, and Fiqah Roslan and Neil Brian Joseph, respective­ly.

The News Reporting merit was for a series of articles on the catamaran boat capsize incident involving tourists in 2017, while the Business & Economic Reporting merit was for an article entitled ‘Australia Place, A New Place to Hang Out.'

Sports Journalism also received a merit by a three-person team comprising Lester Joseph Bingkasan, Rebecca Chong and Arfandi Jaafar for their SAGA Games VIII series.

Meanwhile, Utusan Borneo and See Hua Daily News also bagged the Environmen­tal Journalism Awards in the Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese categories, with stories by Yusop Teppo and Chuan Yeh Nie.

The stories were entitled ‘Usaha Kerajaan, NGO dan Individu Terus Melaksanak­an Pemulihara­an Penyu Pulau Libaran dan Selingan' and ‘Dr Arthur Chung and His World of Insects,' respective­ly.

Saddam Edris of Utusan Borneo also took home the Business & Economic Reporting award with his series entitled ‘Laporan 4 Siri Lawatan Kembara Media Menyaksika­n Eko Pelanconga­n & Kegiatan Ekonomi di Kudat dan Kota Belud.'

A record number of 313 entries were received from the print and electronic media competing in 11 categories.

Sabah Journalist­s' Associatio­n (SJA) president Muguntan Vanar, in his address, said that the Awards continue to see good participat­ion from the English, Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese print media in the various categories, as well as from the electronic media.

However, he noted that the Kadazandus­un entries showed a decline, prompting him to urge editors of trilingual papers to address the matter to encourage more active participat­ion in this category.
